CHAPTER FOUR
Lesson Three: Mind Your Own Business
In 1974, Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald's, was asked to speak to the MBA class at the University of Texas at AustinA dear friend of mine, Keith Cunningham, was a student in that MBA classAfter a powerful and inspiring talk, the class adjourned and the students asked Ray if he would join them at their favorite hangout to have a few beers Ray graciously accepted
"What business am I in?" Ray asked, once the group had all their beers in hand
"Everyone laughed," said Keith"Most of the MBA students thought Ray was just fooling around
No one answered, so Ray asked the question again"What business do you think I'm in?"
The students laughed again, and finally one brave soul yelled out, "Ray, who in the world does not know that you're in the hamburger business"That is what I thought you would say He paused and then quickly said, 'ladies and gentlemen, I'm not in see by chloe bags the hamburger businessMy business is real estate
Keith said that Ray spent a good amount of time explaining his viewpoint In their business plan, Ray knew that the primary business focus was to sell hamburger franchises, but what he never lost sight of was the location of each franchiseHe knew that the real estate and its location was the most significant factor in the success of each franchiseBasically, the person that bought the franchise was also paying for, buying, the land under the franchise for Ray Kroc's organization
McDonald's today is the largest single owner of real estate in the world, owning even more than the Catholic ChurchToday, McDonald's owns some of the most valuable intersections and street corners in America, as well as in other parts of the world
Keith said it was one of the most important lessons in his lifeToday, Keith owns car washes, but his business is the real estate under those car gucci silver bag washes
The previous chapter ended with the diagrams illustrating that most people work for everyone else but themselvesThey work first for the owners of the company, then for the government through taxes, and finally for the bank that owns their mortgage
As a young boy, we did not have a McDonald's nearbyYet, my rich dad was responsible for teaching Mike and me the same lesson that Ray Kroc talked about at the University of Texas
The secret is: "Mind your own business/' Financial struggle is often directly the result of people working all their life for someone elseMany people will have nothing at the end of their working days
Again, a picture is worth a thousand words Here is a diagram of the income statement and balance sheet that best describes Ray Kroc's advice:
Most people
Your Profession -> Your Income
The Rich
Your Assets -> Your Income
Our current educational system focuses on preparing today's cartier tank watch youth to get good jobs by developing scholastic skillsTheir lives will revolve around their wages, or as described earlier, their income columnAnd after developing scholastic skills, they go on to higher levels of schooling to enhance their professional abilitiesThey study to become engineers, scientists, cooks, police officers, artists, writers and so onThese professional skills allow them to enter the workforce and work for money
There is a big difference between your profession and your businessOften I ask people, "What is your business?" And they will say, "Oh I'm a banker Then I ask them if they own the bank? And they usually respond
In that instance, they have confused their profession with their businessTheir profession may be a banker, but they still need their own business Ray Kroc was clear on the difference between his profession and his businessHis profession was always the sameAt one time he sold mixers for picasso cartier milkshakes, and soon thereafter he was selling hamburger franchises- But while his profession was selling hamburger franchises, his business was the accumulation of income-producing real estate
A problem with school is that you often become what you study So if you study, say, cooking, you become a chef If you study the law, you become an attorney, and a study of auto mechanics makes you a mechanicThe mistake in becoming what you study is that too many people forget to mind their own businessThey spend their lives minding someone else's business and making that person rich
To become financially secure, a person needs to mind their own business Your business revolves around your asset column, as opposed to your income columnAs stated earlier, the No1 rule is to know the difference between an asset and a liability, and to buy assetsThe rich focus on their asset columns while everyone else focuses on their income chanel earrings logo statemen The child finds that job, maybe as a doctor or a lawyer, or joins the Army or works for the governmentGenerally, the child begins to make money, credit cards start to arrive in mass, and the shopping begins, if it already hasn't
"Having money to burn, the child goes to places where other young people just like them hang out, and they meet people, they date, and sometimes they get marriedLife is wonderful now, because today, both men and women workTwo incomes are blissThey feel successful, their future is bright, and they decide to buy a house, a car, a television, take vacations and have childrenThe happy bundle arrivesThe demand for cash is enormousThe happy couple decides that their careers are vitally important and begin to work harder, seeking promotions and raisesThe raises come, and so does another child and the need for a bigger houseThey work harder, become better employees, even more dedicatedThey go back to school to get more specialized skills so they can earn more see by chloe bag moneyMaybe they take a second jobTheir incomes go up, but so does the tax bracket they're in and the real estate taxes on their new large home, and their Social Security taxes, and all the other taxesThey get their large paycheck and wonder where all the money wentThey buy some mutual funds and buy groceries with their credit cardThe children reach 5 or 6 years of age, and the need to save for college increases as well as the need to save for their retirement
"That happy couple, born 35 years ago, is now trapped in the Rat Race for the rest of their working daysThey work for the owners of their company, for the government paying taxes, and for the bank paying off a mortgage and credit cards
"Then, they advise their own children to `study hard, get good grades, and find a safe job or career' They learn nothing about money, except from those who profit from their na?et? and work hard all their livesThe process repeats into another hard-working generationThis is the `Rat Race'
The gucci watches for women only way to get out of the "Rat Race" is to prove your proficiency at both accounting and investing, arguably two of the most difficult subjects to masterAs a trained CPA who once worked for a Big 8 accounting firm, I was surprised that Robert had made the learning of these two subjects both fun and excitingThe process was so well disguised that while we were diligently working to get out of the "Rat Race," we quickly forgot we were learning
Soon a product test turned into a fun afternoon with my daughter, talking about things we had never discussed beforeAs an accountant, playing a game that required an Income Statement and Balance Sheet was easySo I had the time to help my daughter and the other pla yers at my table with concepts they did not understandI was the first person-and the only person in the entire test group-to get out of the "Rat Race" that dayI was out within 50 minutes, although the game went on for nearly three hours
At my table was a banker, a business owner and prada fairy a computer programmerWhat greatly disturbed me was how little these people knew about either accounting or investing, subjects so important in their livesI wondered how they managed their own financial affairs in real lifeI could understand why my 19-year-old daughter would not understand, but these were grown adults, at least twice her age
After I was out of the "Rat Race," for the next two hours I watched my daughter and these educated, affluent adults roll the dice and move their markersAlthough I was glad they were all learning so much, I was disturbed by how much the adults did not know about the basics of simple accounting and investingThey had difficulty grasping the relationship between their Income Statement and their Balance SheetAs they bought and sold assets, they had trouble remembering that each transaction could impact their monthly cash flowI thought, how many millions of people are out there in the real world struggling financially, only because they have never white chanel j12 watch been taught these subjects?
Thank goodness they're having fun and are distracted by the desire to win the game, I said to myselfAfter Robert ended the contest, he allowed us fifteen minutes to discuss and critique CASHFLOW among ourselves
The business owner at my table was not happyHe did not like the game"I don't need to know this," he said out loud"I hire accountants, bankers and attorneys to tell me about this stuff
To which Robert replied, "Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of accountants who aren't rich? And bankers, and attorneys, and stockbrokers and real estate brokersThey know a lot, and for the most part are smart people, but most of them are not richSince our schools do not teach people what the rich know, we take advice from these peopleBut one day, you're driving down the highway, stuck in traffic, struggling to get to work, and you look over to your right and you see your accountant stuck in the same traffic jamYou look to your left and you see your chanel black handbags bankThen he smiled, showing a neat row of gray
teeth"Miss Thorn," he said"Who might this young
man be?"
"I am Doon Harrow," said Doon
"I will remember you," said the mayorHe gave
Doon a long look, then turned to the class and smiled
his smile again
"Congratulations to all," he said"Welcome to
Ember's work force
The mayor shook hands with Miss Thorn and
departedThe students gathered their coats and caps
and filed out of the classroomLina walked down the
Wide Hallway with Lizzie, who said, "Poor you! I
thought I picked a bad one, but you got the worstI feel
lucky compared to you Once they were out the cheap chanel purses door,
Lizzie said goodbye and scurried away, as if Lina's bad
luck were a disease she might catch
Lina stood on the steps for a moment and gazed
across Harken Square, where people walked briskly,
bundled up cozily in their coats and scarves, or talked
to one another in the pools of light beneath the great
streetlampsA boy in a red messenger's jacket ran
toward the Gathering HallOn Otterwill Street, a man
pulled a cart filled with sacks of potatoesAnd in the
14
buildings all around the square, rows of lighted windows
shone bright yellow and deep goldThis was where she wanted to be, up
here where omega usa everything happened, not down underground
Someone
tapped her on the shoulderStartled, she
turned and saw Doon behind herHis thin face looked
pale"Will you trade with me?" he asked
"Trade?"
"Trade jobsI don't want to waste my time being a
messengerI want to help save the city, not run around
carrying gossip
Lina gaped at him"You'd rather be in the Pipeworks?"
"Electrician's helper is what I wanted," Doon said
"But Chet won't trade, of coursePipeworks is second
best
"But why?"
"Because the generator is in the Pipeworks," said
Doon
Lina knew about the generator, of courseIn some
mysterious way, prada clutch it turned the running of the river into
power for the cityYou could feel its deep rumble when
you stood in Plummer Square
"I need to see the generator," Doon saidI have ideas about it He thrust his hands into
his pockets"So," he said, "will you trade?"
"Yes!" cried Lina"Messenger is the job I want
15
most!" And not a useless job at all, in her opinionPeople
couldn't be expected to trudge halfway across the
city every time they wanted to communicate with
someoneMessengers connected everyone to everyone
elseAnyway, whether it was important or not, the job
of messenger just happened to be perfect louis vuitton backpacks for LinaShe could run foreverAnd she loved
exploring every nook and cranny of the city, which was
what a messenger got to do
"All right then," said DoonHe handed her his
crumpled piece of paper, which he must have retrieved
from the floorLina reached into her pocket, pulled
out her slip of paper, and handed it to him
"Thank you," he said
"You're welcome," said LinaHappiness sprang up
in her, and happiness always made her want to run
She took the steps three at a time and sped down
Broad Street toward home

CHAPTER 2
A Message to the Mayor
Lina often took different routes between school new omega watches and
Goodbye to everyone, goodbye to everythingFor a
second, a picture of herself arriving in the bright city
of her dreams flashed into her mind, and then it faded
and was goneShe had no idea what lay ahead
She set Poppy down against the wall of the entry
passage"Sit here," she told her"Don't move until I tell
you to Poppy sat, her eyes wide, her plump legs sticking
out in front of her
Lina took hold of the rope at the rear of the boat
Doon took hold of the rope at the frontThey heaved
the boat up and stretched sideways to swing it out over
the waterIt tipped alarmingly from side to side"Let it
down!" yelled LinaThey both let the ropes slide
through their hands, and the boat vintage cartier watch fell and hit the water
with a slapIt bounced and rocked and pulled against
its tether, but Doon's knot heldThe boat stayed in
place, waiting for them
"Here I go!" Doon criedHe bent over, gripped the
rim of the boat with one hand, turned backward, and
stepped inThe boat tipped sideways under his weight
Doon staggered a step, and then found his balance"All
right!" he yelled"Hand me Poppy!"
Lina lifted Poppy, who began to howl and kick at

die sight of the bucking boat and the churning water
But Doon's arms were right there, and Lina thrust her
into themA second later, she jumped in herself, and
then all three of them were tossed to the floor of the
boat by its tiffany co jewelry violent rocking
Doon managed to get to his feetHe hauled on the
rope that held the boat to the bank until he was close
enough to reach the knotWater
splashed into his faceHe yanked at the knot, loosened
it, pulled the rope free--and the boat shot forward

CHAPTER 18
Where the River Goes
For a second, Lina saw the banks of the river streak
byAhead was the opening of the tunnel, like an
enormous mouthThey plunged into it and left the
light of the Pipeworks behindIn complete darkness,
the boat pitched and rolled, and Lina, in the bottom of
it, banged from side to side, gripping Poppy with one
arm and grabbing with the other hand for anything to
hold on toDoon slid men's gucci wallet into her, and she slid into the
boxesPoppy was shrieking wildly
"Doon!" Lina shouted, and he shouted back,
"Hold on! Hold on!" But she kept losing her grip on
the edge of the boat and being flung sidewaysShe was
terrified that Poppy would slam into the metal bench,
or be torn from her arms and tossed into the river
The boat hit something and shuddered, then
raced onIt felt like being swallowed, this rushing
238
through the dark, with the river roaring like a thouIsand
voices
Lina's legs were tangled with Doon's, and Poppy's
arms were so tight around her neck that she could
hardly breatheBut it was the dark that was most
terrible--going so fast into the darkIf they were chanel jewelry online going to smash
into a wall or plunge into a bottomless hole, there was
nothing she could do about itAll she could do was
hold tight to PoppyShe did that, for what seemed a
long time
And then at last the current slowed, and the boat
stopped thrashing about so wildlyLina managed to sit
up, and she felt Doon moving, tooPoppy's shrieks
turned to whimpersThe darkness was still complete,
but Lina sensed space above and around herWhere
were they? She had to see"Are you all right? Can you find
us a candle?"
"I'll try," Doon saidShe felt him scramble past her
to the back of the boat, and she heard a scrape as he
pulled a box out from its place under the bench"Can't
find the latch!" Doon balenciaga bag s One room was
stacked with hundreds of cans of fruitThere was
something called pineapple, I remember that one
especially
"What was pineapple?" asked Lina
"It was yellow and sweet," said Granny with a
dreamy look in her eyes"I had it four times before we
ran out of it
But these tours had been discontinued long before
Lina was bornThe storerooms, people said, were no
longer a pleasure to look atTheir dusty shelves stood
mostly empty nowIt was rumored that in some rooms
nothing was left at allA child seeing the rooms where
powdered milk had been stored, or the rooms that
101
stored bandages or socks or pins or notebooks, or-- most of all--the dozens of rooms that had once held
thousands of light bulbs--would not feel, as earlier
generations of children had, that Ember was endlessly
richToday's children, if they were to tour the storerooms,
would feel omega aqua terra watch afraid
Thinking about all this, Lina waited in the line of
people at Lizzie's stationWhen she got to the front,
she leaned forward with her elbows on the counter and
whispered, "Lizzie, can you meet me after you're
through with work? I'll wait for you right outside the
door Lizzie nodded eagerly
At four o'clock, Lizzie came trotting out the office
doorLina said to her, "Will you come home with me
for a minute? I want to show you something
"Sure," said Lizzie, and as they walked, Lizzie
talked"My wrist is killing me from writing all day," she said"You have to write in the tiniest letters to save
paper, so I get a terrible cramp in my wrist and my
fingersAnd people are so rudeToday they were worse
than everI said to some guy, 'You can't have fifteen
cans of corn, you can only have three,' and he said,
'Look, don't tell me that, I saw plenty of cans in the
Pott Street market omega de ville men's watches just yesterday,' and I said, 'Well,
that's why there aren't so many left today,' and he said,
'Don't be smart with me, carrot-head' But what am I
supposed to do? I can't make cans of corn out of thin
air
102
They passed through Harken Square, around the
Gathering Hall, and down Roving Street, where three
of the floodlights were out, making a cave of shadow
"Lizzie," said Lina, interrupting the flow of talk"Is
it true about light bulbs?"
"Is what true?"
"That there aren't very many left?"
Lizzie shruggedThey hardly ever
let us go downstairs into the storeroomsAll we see are
the reports the carriers turn in--how many forks in
Room 1146, how many doorknobs in 3291, how many
children's shoes in 2249
"But when you see the report for the light bulb
rooms, what does it say?"
"I never get to see that one," said Lizzie"That one,
and a few other ones omega usa like the vitamin report, only a few
people can see
"Who?"
"Oh, the mayor, and of course old Flab Face Lina
looked at her questioningly"You know, Farlo Batten,
the head of the storeroomsHe is so mean, Lina, you
would just hate himHe counts us late if we come in
even two minutes after eight, and he looks over our
shoulders as we're writing, which is awful because he
has bad breath, and he runs his finger over what we've
written and says, 'This word is illegible, that word is
illegible, these numbers are illegible' It's his favorite
word, illegible
103
When they came to Lina's street, Lina ducked her
head in the door of the yarn shop and said hello to
Granny, and then they climbed the stairs to the apartment
Lizzie was talking about how hard it was to
stand up all day, how it made her knees ache, how her
shoes pinched her feetShe stopped talking long
enough ladies omega watches to say hello to Evaleen Murdo, who was sitting
by the window with Poppy on her lap, and then she
began again as Lina led her into her bedroom
"Lina, where were you when the big blackout
came?" she asked, but she went right on without waiting
for an answer"I was at home, luckilyBut it was
scary, wasn't it?"
Lina noddedShe didn't want to talk about what
had happened that day
"I hate those blackouts," Lizzie went on"People
say there's going to be more and more of them, and
that someday--" She stopped, frowned, and started
again"Anyway, nothing bad happened to meAfter
that, I got up and figured out a whole new way to do
my hair
It seemed to Lina that Lizzie was like a clock
wound too tightly and running too fastShe'd always
been a little this way, but today she was more so than
everHer gaze skipped from one spot to another, her
fingers twiddled with the edge of her louis vuitton backpacks s When I wanted to buy a Porsche, the easy road would have been to call my banker and get a loanInstead of choosing to focus in the liability column, I chose to focus in the asset column
As a habit, I used my desire to consume to inspire and motivate my financial genius to invest
Too often today, we focus to borrowing money to get the things we want instead of focusing on creating money One is easier in the short term, but harder in the long termIt's a bad habit that we as individuals and as a nation have gotten intoRemember, the easy road often becomes hard, and the hard road often becomes easy
The earlier you can train yourself and those you dior saddle bag love to be masters of money, the betterMoney is a powerful forceUnfortunately, people use the power of money against them If your financial intelligence is low, money will run all over youIt will be smarter than you If money is smarter than you, you will work for it all your life
To be the master of money, you need to be smarter than itThen money will do as it is told Instead of being a slave to it, you will be the master of itThat is financial intelligenceTHE NEED FOR HEROES: The power of mythWhen I was a kid, I greatly admired Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Yogi BerraAs a kid playing Little League, I wanted to be just like themI treasured their ceramic chanel baseball cardsI wanted to know everything about themI knew the stats, the RBI, the ERAs, their batting averages, how much they got paid, and how they came up 1 from the minorsI wanted to know everything because I wanted to be just like them
Every time, as a 9 or 10 year-old kid, when I stepped up to bat or played first base or catcher, I wasn't me It's one of the most powerful ways we learn that we often lose as adults
Today, I watch young kids playing basketball near my home On the court they're not little Johnny; they're Michael Jordan, Sir Charles or Clyde Copying or emulating heroes is true power learningAnd that is why when someone like louis vuitton miroir OSimpson falls from grace, there is such a huge outcry
There is more than just a courtroom trialIt is the loss of a heroSomeone people grew up with, looked up to, and wanted to be likeSuddenly we need to rid ourselves of that person
I have new heroes as I grow olderI have golf heroes such as Peter Jacobsen, Fred Couples and Tiger WoodsI copy their swings and do my best to read everything I can about themI also have heroes such as Donald Trump, Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, George Soros and Jim RogersIn my older years, I know their stats just like I knew the ERAs and RBI of my baseball heroes I follow what Warren Buffett invests in, and read anything gucci pantheon I can about his point of view on the marketI read Peter Lynch's book to understand how he chooses stocksAnd I read about Donald Trump, trying to find out how he negotiates and puts deals together
Just as I was not me when I was up to bat, when I'm in the market or I'm negotiating a deal, I am subconsciously acting with the bravado of Trump Or when analyzing a trend, I look at it as though Peter Lynch were doing it By having heroes, we tap into a tremendous source of raw genius
But heroes do more than simply inspire usHeroes make things look easyIt's the making it look easy that convinces us to want to be just like them"If they can do it, so can christian dior saddle bag Dropping the sack, "letting go", forgive and forget -- that is the teaching of Maitreya, the Buddha of the futureEditor: na
PARABLE 087: LUST Analysis allowed winners to see that critics were blind, and to see opportunities that everyone else missedAnd finding what people miss is | key to any success
Real estate is a powerful investment tool for anyone seeking financial independence or freedomIt is a unique investment toolYet, every time I mention real estate as a vehicle, I often hear, "I don't want to fix toilets That's what Peter Lynch calls "noise That's what my rich dad would say is the cynic talkingSomeone who criticizes and does not
analyzeSomeone who lets their doubts and fears close their mind instead of open their eyes
So when someone says, "I don't want to fix toilets," I want to fire back, "What makes you think I want to?" They're saying a toilet is more important than what they wantI talk about freedom from the rat race, and they focus on toiletsThat is the thought christian dior saddle pattern that keeps most people poorThey criticize instead of analyze
" 'I don't wants' hold the key to your success," rich dad would say
Because I, too, do not want to fix toilets, I shop hard for a property manager who does fix toiletsAnd by finding a great property manager who runs houses or apartments, well, my cash flow goes upBut more importantly a great property manager allows me to buy a lot more real estate since I don't have to fix toiletsA great property manager is key to success in real estateFinding a good manager is more important to me than the real estateA great property manager often hears of great deals before real estate agents do, which makes them even more valuable
That is what rich dad meant by " 'I don't wants' hold the key to your success Because I do not want to fix toilets either, I figured out how to buy more real estate and chanel white watches expedite my getting out of the rat raceThe people who continue to say "I don't want to fix toilets" often deny themselves the use of this powerful investment vehicleToilets are more important than their freedom
In the stock market, I often hear people say, "I don't want to lose money Well, what makes them think I or anyone else likes losing money? They don't make money because they chose to not lose moneyInstead of analyzing, they close their minds to another powerful investment vehicle, the stock market
In December 1996,1 was riding with a friend past our neighborhood gas stationHe looked up and saw that the price of oil was going upMy friend is a worry wart or a "Chicken Little To him, the sky is always going to fall, and it usually does, on him
When we got home, he showed me all the stats as to why the price of oil was going to go up over the see by chloe bags next few yearsStatistics I had never seen before, even though I already owned a substantial share block of an existing oil companyWith that information, I immediately began looking for and found a new undervalued oil company that was about to find some oil depositsMy broker was excited about this new company, and I bought 15,000 shares for 65 cents per share
In February 1997, this same friend and I drove by the same gas station, and sure enough, the price per gallon had gone up nearly 15 percentAgain, the "Chicken Little" worried and complained I smiled because in January 1997, that little oil company hit oil and those 15,000 shares went up to more than $3 per share since he had first given me the tipAnd the price of gas will continue to go up if what my friend says is true
Instead of analyzing, their little chicken closes their mindIf most people white ceramic chanel watch understood how a "stop" worked in stock-market investing, there would be more people -investing to win instead of investing not to loseA "stop" is simply a computer command that sells your stock automatically if the price begins to drop, helping to minimize your losses and maximize some gainsIt's a great tool for those who are terrified of losing
So whenever I hear people focusing on their "I don't wants," rather than what they do want, I know the "noise" in their head must be loudChicken Little has taken over their brain and is yelling, "The sky is falling and toilets are breaking So they avoid their "don't wants," but they pay a huge priceThey may never get what they want in life
Rich dad gave me a way of looking at Chicken Little "Just do what Colonel Sanders did At the age of 66, he lost his business and began to live on his Social Security fairy bag prada che She was

now that he will be Prime Minister!" Well, if things had gone

what might have beenPolitics was a gamble, he reflected; but the discount hermes game
wasn't over yetHe cast his eyes rapidly over more pages,
full of the little trifles, the insignificant, happy, daily trifles that
had made up her life
He took up another volume and opened it at random"What a coward I am!
I let the chance slip againBut it seemed selfish to bother him with my
own affairs, when he has so much to think aboutAnd we so seldom have
an evening alone What was the meaning of that? Oh, here was the
explanation--it referred to her work in the East End"I plucked up
courage and talked to Gilbert at lastHe was so kind, so goodHe made
no ob jection He remembered that conversationShe had told him cartier tank louis that
she felt so idle, so uselessShe wished to have some work of her own
She wanted to do something--she had blushed so prettily, he remembered,
as she said it, sitting in that very chair--to help othersHe had
bantered her a littleHadn't she enough to do looking after him, after
her home? Still, if it amused her, of course he had no objectionWhat
was it? Some district? Some committee? Only she must promise not to make
herself illSo it seemed that every Wednesday she went to Whitechapel
He remembered how he hated the clothes she wore on those occasionsBut
she had taken it very seriously, it seemedThe diary was full gucci men wallet of

"would you have time to come home with me later on
today? Just for a minute? I found something I'd like to
show you
"Found what?" asked Captain Fleery
"Some paper with writing on itI think it might be
important
Captain Fleery raised her skinny eyebrows"What
do you mean, important?"
"Well, I'm not sureBut would you
look at it anyway?"
So that evening Captain Fleery came home with
Lina and peered at the bits of paperShe bent down
and inspected the writing"Acks? Rem?

"I don't balenciaga bag black know," said Lina"The words are all broken

"I see," said Captain FleeryShe poked at the

"But who would have such small, perfect writing?"
"That's the way they wrote in the old days,"
said Captain Fleery"It could be a very old recipe

"But then why would it have been kept in this

"I think it was locked up in here for some reason,

But Captain Fleery didn't seem to have heard her
"Or," she said, "it could be a school exerciseSomeone's

"But have you ever seen paper like this? Doesn't it
look as if it came from someplace else--not here?"
Captain Fleery straightened upA look of puzzlement
came over her face"There is nowhere but here,"
she saidShe put both her hands on Lina's shoulders
"You, my dear, are letting your imagination run away
with youAre you overtired, Lina? Are you anxious? I

"No," said Lina, "I'm fineBut I don't know

"Never mind," said Captain Fleery"Don't think
about itYou're worrying too much-- I know, I know, we all are, there's so much to worry
about, but we mustn't let it unsettle us She gave Lina
a long lookHer eyes were the color of dishwater
"Help is coming," she said
"Who is?"
98
Captain Fleery bent down and lowered her voice,
as if telling a secret"Who built our city, dear?"
"The Builders," said LinaAnd the Builders will come again
and show us the way
"They will?"
"Very roxanne mulberry soon," said Captain Fleery
"How do you know?"
Captain Fleery straightened up again and clapped
a hand over her heart"I know it here," she said"And
I have seen it in a dreamSo have all of us, all the
Believers
So that's what they believe, Lina thought--and
Captain Fleery is one of themShe wondered how the
captain could feel so sure about it, just because she'd
seen it in a dreamMaybe it was the same for her as the
sparkling city was for Lina--she wanted it to be true
The captain's face lit up"I know what you must

ready to goLina used Doon's rope to make a leash for
PoppyShe tied one end around Poppy's waist and the
other around her ownShe filled her pockets with
packs of matches, and Doon put all the remaining
candles in his sack--in case they'arrived in the new
city at nightHe filled his bottle with river water, lit a
candle for himself and one for Lina, and thus
equipped, they left the boat behind and crept up the
rocky shelf to the path

CHAPTER 19
A World of Light
As they squeezed past the rocks at the entrance to the
path, Doon thought he saw the candlelight glance off a
shiny place on the wallHe stopped to look, and when
he saw what it was, he called out to Lina, who was a few
steps ahead of dolce On the days when she'd come here with her
I father, Lina had spent hours wandering along the
I gravel paths that ran between the vegetable beds, snifff'
ing the leaves, poking her fingers into the dirt, and
I learning to tell the plants apart by their look and smell
ft There were the beans and peas with their curly tenf
drils, the dark green spinach, the ruffled lettuce, and
the hard, pale green cabbages, some of them as big as a
newborn baby's headWhat she loved best was to rub
the leaves of the tomato plant between her fingers and
breathe in their pungent, powdery smell
A long, straight path led from one end of the
building to the otherAbout halfway down the path,
Clary was crouching by a bed of carrotsLina omega aqua terra watch ran
toward her, and Clary smiled, brushed the dirt from
her hands, and stood up
59
Clary was tall and solid, with big hands and
knobby knucklesShe had a square jaw and square
shoulders, and brown hair cut in a short, squarish way
You might have thought from looking at her that she
was a gruff, unfriendly person--but her nature was
just the oppositeShe was more comfortable with
plants than with people, Lina's father had always said
She was strong but shy, a person of much knowledge
but few wordsLina had always liked herEven when
she was little, Clary did not treat her like a baby but
gave her jobs to do--pulling up carrots, picking
bugs off cabbagesSince her parents had died, Lina
had come many times to talk to new omega watches Clary, or just to
work silently beside herClary was always kind to her,
and working with the plants took Lina's mind off her
grief
"Well," said ClaryShe smiled at Lina, wiped her
hands on her already grimy pants, and smiled some
moreFinally she said, "You're a messenger
"Yes," said Lina, "and I have a message for youIt's
from Arbin Swinn'Please add four extra crates to my
order, two of potatoes and two of cabbages"I can't do that" she said"At least,
I can send him the cabbages, but only one small crate
of potatoes
"Why?" asked Lina
"Well, we have a sort of problem with the
potatoes
60
"What is it?" asked LinaClary had a habit of
answering questions in the briefest possible wayYou
had to keep asking and chanel logo earrings asking before she would believe
you really wanted to know and weren't just being
politeThen she would explain, and you could see how
much she knew, and how much she loved her work
"I'll show you," she saidShe led the way to a bed
where the green leaves were spotted with blackI haven't seen it beforeWhen you dig up the
potatoes, they're runny inside instead of hard, and they

Most people in Ember had potatoes at every
I meal--mashed, boiled, stewed, roastedThey'd had
fried potatoes, too, in the days before the cooking oil
ran out
| "I'd hate it if we couldn't have potatoes anymore,"
I Lina vintage chanel jewelry said
I "I would, too," said Clary
* They sat on the edge of the potato bed and talked
for a while, about Lina's grandmother and the baby,
about the trouble Clary was having with the beehives,
and about the greenhouse sprinkler system"It hasn't
worked right since Clary hesitated and glanced
; sideways at Lina"For a long time," she saidShe didn't
I want to say "since your father died" Lina understood
that"I should go," she said"I have to

take Arbin Swinn the answer to his message
"I hope you'll come again," said Clary"You can
come whenever you can come any time Lina said
thank you and turned to go
But just outside the greenhouse door, she heard
running footsteps and a strange, high, sobbing omega usa sound In a short time, both made significant progress and ultimately achieved liberation
This story illustrates the crucial role of a good spiritual advisor--as even Maha-kasyapa, the wisest of Arhats, could errSince Buddha Amitabha and the highest Bodhisattvas themselves are teachers and guides in Sukhavati (the Land of Bliss), the Buddha taught that rebirth in this Pure Land is the safest shortcut to Enlightenment and BuddhahoodEditor: na

The Buddha compares the human condition to that of a traveller on a stormy nightOnly from time to time does the dark night give way to a flash of lightningSuffering (dukkha) is like the dark night that surrounds the traveller, while the flashes of lightning are those rare occasions of joy that excite the human mind (birth, marriage, a promotion, etcEditor: na

PARABLE 034: KING BIMBISARA AND PRINCE AJATASATRU
"According to the Parinirvana Sutra, since King Bimbisara had no heir by his wife Vaidehi, he consulted a diviner, who said that there was a hermit presently living in the mountains who, after he died, would be reborn as Bimbisara's sonBimbisara was so impatient for the birth of an heir that he
had the hermit killedShortly after, Vaidehi conceived, but the diviner foretold that the child would become the king's enemy' In fear of this child, the king dropped him from atop a tower [but the child survived the fall]It is said that as a young man Ajatasatru was persuaded to rebel against his father by Devadatta, who told him the story of his birthogether with Devadatta, he contrived a double conspiracy: since Devadatta was eager to take over the leadership of the Buddhist order, he was to murder the Buddha, and Ajatasattu was to kill his own fatherThe plot was discoveredBimbisara pardoned his son and ceded him the throneAjatasattu, nevertheless, did not feel secure with his father still alive and had him incarcerated and starved together with his wife, Queen Vaidehi"After Bimbisara's death, Ajatasatru came to regret his conduct deeplyTormented by guilt over the death of his father, he broke out in virulent sores during the second month of his fiftieth year, and it was predicted that he would die in the third monthAt the advice of his physician balenciaga first and minister Jivaka, he sought out Sakyamuni Buddha who taught him the doctrines of the Parinirvana Sutra, enabling him to eradicate his evil karma and prolong his life

PARABLE 035: DEMONS OF THE MIND
In his Awakening of the Faith Treatise, the patriarch Asvaghosa (first century) admonished:
"There may be some disciples whose root of merit is not yet mature, whose control of mind is weak and whose power of application is limited -- and yet who are sincere in their purpose to seek enlightenment -- these for a time may be beset and bewildered by maras and evil influences who are seeking to break down their good purposeSuch disciples, seeing seductive sights, attractive girls, strong young men, must constantly remind themselves that all such tempting and alluring things are mind-made, and, if they do this, their tempting power will disappear and they will no longer be annoyedOr, if they have visions of heavenly gods and Bodhisattvas and Buddhas surrounded by celestial glories, they should remind themselves that these, too, are mind-made and unrealOr, if they should be uplifted and excited by
listening to mysterious Dharanis, to lectures upon the paramitas, to elucidations of the great principles of the Mahayana, they must remind themselves that these also are emptiness and mind-made, that in cartier santos 100 their essence they are Nirvana itselfOr, if they should have intimations within that they have attained transcendental powers, recalling past lives, or foreseeing future lives, or, reading others' thoughts, or freedom to visit other Buddha-lands, or great powers of eloquence, all of [these] may tempt them to become covetous for worldly power and riches and fameOr, they may be tempted by extremes of emotion, at times angry, at other times joyous, or at times very kind-hearted and compassionate, at other times the very opposite, or at times alert and purposeful, at other times indolent and stupid, at times full of faith and zealous in their practice, at other times engrossed in other affairs and negligentAll of [these] will keep them vacillating, at times experiencing a kind of fictitious samadhi, such as the heretics boast of, but not the true samadhiOr later, when they are quite advanced [they] become absorbed in trances for a day, or two, or even seven, not partaking of any food but upheld by inward food of their spirit, being admired by their friends and feeling very comfortable and proud and complacent, and then later becoming very erratic, sometimes eating little, sometimes greedily, the ex pression of their face constantly changingBecause of all such strange manifestations and developments in the course of their practices, disciples should be on guard to keep the mind under constant controlThey should neither grasp after nor replica pasha cartier become attached to the passing and unsubstantial things of the senses or concepts and moods of the mindIf they do this they will be able to keep far away from the hindrances of karma in Goddard, A Buddhist Bible02-403)

PARABLE 036: DEMON OF SORROW The library had two big rooms, one for
fiction, which was stories people made up out of their
imaginations, and the other for fact, which was information
about the real worldThe walls of both rooms
were lined with shelves, and on most of the shelves
were hundreds of packets of pagesEach packet was
held together with stout loops of stringThe packets
leaned against each other at angles and lay in untidy
stacksSome were thick, and some were so slim that
only a clip was needed to hold them togetherThe
pages of the oldest packets were yellowed and warped,
and their edges were uneven rows of ripples
117
These were the books of Ember, written over the
years by its citizensThey contained in their dose
written pages much that was imagined and everything
that was known
Edward Pocket looked up and nodded chanel cambon handbag briefly at
Doon, one of his most frequent visitorsHe went into the fact room, to the section of
shelves labeled "F The books were arranged by subject,
but even so, it wasn't easy to find what you
wantedA book about moths, for instance, might be
under "M" for moths, or "I" for insects, or "B" for bugs
It might even be under "F" for flying thingsUsually
you had to browse through the entire library to make
sure you'd found all the books on one subjectBut
since he was looking for "fire," he thought he might as
well start with "F
Fire was rare in EmberWhen there was a fire, it
was because there had been an accident--someone
had left a dishtowel too close to an electric burner on
a stove, or a cord had frayed and a spark had flown out
and ignited curtainsThen the citizens would rush in
with buckets of water, and the fire chanel logo necklace was quickly
drownedBut it was, of course, possible to start a fire
on purposeYou could hold a sliver of wood to the
stove burner until it burst into flame, and then for a
moment it would flare brightly, giving off orange light
The trick was to find a way to make the light last
If you had a light that would keep going, you could go
118
out into the Unknown Regions and see what was there
Finding a way to explore the Unknown Regions was
the only thing Doon could think of to do
He took down a book from the "F" shelfFungus, it was calledThe next book was called How to Repair FurnitureHe put that back, tooHe
went through Foot Diseases, Fun with String, Coping
with Failure, and Canned Fruit Recipes before he finally
found a book called All About FireHe sat down at one
of the library's square tables to read chanel white ceramic watch it
But the person who had written the book knew no
more about fire than DoonMostly the book described
the dangers of fireA long section of it was about a
building in Winifred Square that had caught fire forty
years ago, and how all its doors and all its furniture
had burned up and smoke had filled the air for days
Another part was about what to do if your oven caught
on fire
Doon closed the book and sighedHe could write a better book than thatHe got up
and wandered restlessly around the librarySometimes
you could find useful things just by choosing
randomly from the shelvesHe had done this many
times--just reached out and grabbed something-- in the hope that by accident he might come upon the
very piece of information he neededIt would be
something that another person had written down
without understanding its women's santos 100 replica significance, just a sentence
119
or two that would be like a flash of light in Doon's
mind, fitting together with things he already knew to
make a solution to everything
Although he'd often found something interesting
in these searches, he'd never found anything importantToday was no differentHe did come across a collection
called Mysterious Words from the Past, which he
read for a whileIt was about words and phrases so old
that their meanings had been forgotten

prepared a speech, that it would always be a treasured possession
She had, he supposed, other clothes upon which a pearl brooch would not
look quite so incongruousShe was wearing the little black coat and
skirt that seemed the uniform of her professionThen he remembered--she
was in ladies omega watches mourning, of courseShe, too, had had her tragedy--a brother, to
whom she was devoted, had died only a week or two before AngelaIn
some accident was it? He could not remember--only Angela telling him
Angela, with her genius for sympathy, had been terribly upsetMeanwhile
Sissy Miller had risenShe was putting on her glovesEvidently she
felt that she ought not to intrudeBut he could not let her go without
saying something about her futureWhat were her plans? Was there any
way in which he could help her?
She was gazing at the table, where she had sat at her typewriter, where
the diary layAnd, lost in her memories of Angela, she did not at once
answer his suggestion that he should help herShe seemed for a
moment not to cheap chanel purses understandSo he repeated:
"What are your plans, Miss Miller?"
"My plans? Oh, that's all right, MrClandon," she exclaimed"Please
don't bother yourself about me
He took her to mean that she was in no need of financial assistanceIt
would be better, he realized, to make any suggestion of that kind in a
letterAll he could do now was to say as he pressed her hand,
"Remember, Miss Miller, if there's any way in which I can help you, it
will be a pleasure Then he opened the doorFor a moment, on the
threshold, as if a sudden thought had struck her, she stoppedClandon," she said, looking straight at him for the first time, and
for the first time he was struck by the ex pression, sympathetic yet
searching, in her eyes"If at any omega aqua terra watch time," she continued, "there's
anything I can do to help you, remember, I shall feel it, for your
wife's sake, a pleasure
With that she was goneHer words and the look that went with them were
unexpectedIt was almost as if she believed, or hoped, that he would
need herA curious, perhaps a fantastic idea occurred to him as he
returned to his chairCould it be, that during all those years when he
had scarcely noticed her, she, as the novelists say, had entertained a
passion for him? He caught his own reflection in the glass as he passed
He was over fifty; but he could not help admitting that he was still, as
the looking-glass showed him, a very distinguished-looking man
"Poor Sissy Miller!" he said, half laughingHow he vintage chanel jewelry would have liked to
share that joke with his wife! He turned instinctively to her diary
"Gilbert," he read, opening it at random, "looked so wonderful
It was as if she had answered his questionOf course, she seemed to
say, you're very attractive to womenOf course Sissy Miller felt that

he had looked at her across the table and said to himself, She is the

about that line"Maybe it's 'ledge,'" she said"'Down

"Yes, that must be rightThere's a stone marked

"But look, but look Lina tapped the paper
urgently"Here it says 'he' and here it says 'ey' It's
talking about a key!"
"But what is it a door to?" said Doon, sitting back
"Remember, we thought about this beforeA door in
the bank of the river would lead under the Pipeworks"Maybe it leads to a long
tunnel that goes way out beyond Ember, and then
gradually up and up black spy bag until it comes out at the other
city
"What other city?" Doon glanced up at the drawings
tacked to the walls of Lina's room
174
Doon shruggedOr it could be
another city exactly like this one
That was a gloomy thoughtBoth of them felt
their spirits sink a little at the ideaSo they turned back
to the task of deciphering
"Next line," said Lina
But Doon sat back on his heels againHe stared
into the air, half smiling"I have an idea," he said"If

squeaked and groaned every time he movedHe flailed
around so much that the noise woke his father, who

"No,"
said Doon"Just can't sleep"
"Are you worrying? Frightened of anything?"
Doon wanted to say, Yes, FatherI'm worried
because the mayor of our city is taking for himself the
things that people need, and I'm afraid because any
day our lights could go out foreverI'm worried and
afraid a lot of the time, but I'm also excited because I
think there is a way out, and we might find it--and all
those feelings are whirling around in my head, which
makes it hard to sleep
He could have told his father everythingHis
father would have plunged in with great replica fendi spy bag enthus "Yes," he said at length He straightened his tie
at the looking-glass over the mantelpiece
"Caught in a trap," he said, "killed," and sat down and read the
newspaper
So that was the end of that marriage
THE MAN WHO LOVED HIS KIND
Trotting through Deans Yard that afternoon, Prickett Ellis ran straight
into Richard Dalloway, or rather, just as they were passing, the covert
side glance which each was casting on the other, under his hat, over his
shoulder, broadened and burst into recognition; they had not met for
twenty yearsThey had been at school togetherAnd what was Ellis
doing? The Bar? Of course, of course--he had followed the case in the
papersBut it was impossible to talk hereWouldn't he drop in that
evening(They lived in the same old place--just round the corner)One
or two people were coming"An awful swell now," said
Richard
"Good--till this evening then," said Richard, and went his way, "jolly
glad" (that was quite true) to have met that queer chap, who hadn't
changed one bit since he had been at school--just the same knobbly,
chubby little boy then, with prejudices sticking out all over him, but
uncommonly brilliant--won the Newcastle
Prickett Ellis, white chanel bag however, as he turned and looked at Dalloway
disappearing, wished now he had not met him or, at least, for he had
always liked him personally, hadn't promised to come to this party
Dalloway was married, gave parties; wasn't his sort at allHe would
have to dressHowever, as the evening drew on, he supposed, as he had
said that, and didn't want to be rude, he must go there
But what an appalling entertainment! There was Joynson; they had nothing
to say to each otherHe had been a pompous little boy; he had grown
rather more self-important--that was all; there wasn't a single other
soul in the room that Prickett Ellis knewSo, as he could not
go at once, without saying a word to Dalloway, who seemed altogether
taken up with his duties, bustling about in a white waistcoat, there he
had to standIt was the sort of thing that made his gorge riseThink
of grown up, responsible men and women doing this every night of their
lives! The lines deepened on his blue and red shaven cheeks as he leant
against the wall in complete silence, for though he worked like a horse,
he kept himself fit by exercise; and he looked hard and fierce, as if
his moustaches were dipped in frostHe bristled; he gratedHis
meagre chanel earrings dress clothes made him look unkempt, insignificant, angular
Idle, chattering, overdressed, without an idea in their heads, these
fine ladies and gentlemen went on talking and laughing; and Prickett
Ellis watched them and compared them with the Brunners who, when they
won their case against Fenners' Brewery and got two hundred pounds
compensation (it was not half what they should have got) went and spent
five of it on a clock for himThat was a decent sort of thing to do;
that was the sort of thing that moved one, and he glared more severely
than ever at these people, overdressed, cynical, prosperous, and
compared what he felt now with what he felt at eleven o'clock that
morning when old Brunner and MrsBrunner, in their best clothes,
awfully respectable and clean looking old people, had called in to give
him that small token, as the old man put it, standing perfectly upright
to make his speech, of gratitude and respect for the very able way in
which you conducted our case, and MrsBrunner piped up, how it was all
due to him they feltAnd they deeply appreciated his
generosity--because, of course, he hadn't taken a fee
And as he took the clock and put it on the middle of his mantelpiece, tiffany and co necklace he
had felt that he wished nobody to see his faceThat was what he worked
for--that was his reward; and he looked at the people who were actually
before his eyes as if they danced over that scene in his chambers and
were exposed by it, and as it faded--the Brunners faded--there remained
as if left of that scene, himself, confronting this hostile population,
a perfectly plain, unsophisticated man, a man of the people (he
straightened himself) very badly dressed, glaring, with not an air or a
grace about him, a man who was an ill hand at concealing his feelings, a
plain man, an ordinary human being, pitted against the evil, the
corruption, the heartlessness of societyBut he would not go on
staringNow he put on his spectacles and examined the picturesHe read
the titles on a line of books; for the most part poetryHe would have
liked well enough to read some of his old favourites again--Shakespeare,
Dickens--he wished he ever had time to turn into the National Gallery,
but he couldn't--no, one could notReally one could not--with the world

fairly clamoured for helpThis wasn't an age for luxuriesAnd he
looked at the arm chairs and large gucci bag the paper knives and the well bound books,
and shook his head, knowing that he would never have the time, never he
was glad to think have the heart, to afford himself such luxuriesThe
people here would be shocked if they knew what he paid for his tobacco;
how he had borrowed his clothesHis one and only extravagance was his
little yacht on the Norfolk BroadsAnd that he did allow himself, He
did like once a year to get right away from everybody and lie on his
back in a fieldHe thought how shocked they would be--these fine folk--if
they realized the amount of pleasure he got from what he was old
fashioned enough to call the love of nature; trees and fields he had
known ever since he was a boy
These fine people would be shockedIndeed, standing there, putting his
spectacles away in his pocket, he felt himself grow more and more
shocking every instantAnd it was a very disagreeable feelingHe did
not feel this--that he loved humanity, that he paid only fivepence an
ounce for tobacco and loved nature--naturally and quietlyEach of these
pleasures had been turned into a protestHe felt that these people whom
he despised made him stand and deliver and justify himself"I am an
ordinary man," he kept dolce and gabbana knock off sa "My mother's name--" she added"For God's sake,
man, don't mention your mother's name!" he shrieked, trembling like an
aspen and flushing to the roots of his hair, and it was ten minutes at
least before she could induce him to proceedAt length he decreed that
if she gave him four strokes and a half in the small of the back at a
spot indicated by himself (the half conceded, he said, in recognition of
the fact that her great grandmother's uncle was killed at Trafalgar) it
was his opinion that her honour would be as good as newThis was done;
they retired to a restaurant; drank two bottles of wine for which he
insisted upon paying; and parted with protestations of eternal
friendship
Then we had Fanny's account of her visit to the Law CourtsAt her first
visit she had come to the conclusion that the Judges were either made of
wood or were impersonated by large animals resembling man who had been
trained to move with extreme dignity, mumble and nod their headsTo test
her theory she top chanel bags had liberated a handkerchief of bluebottles at the
critical moment of a trial, but was unable to judge whether the creatures

Helen went to the Royal Academy, but when asked to deliver her report
upon the pictures she began to recite from a pale blue volume, "O! for

more of this gibberish
"We want no more poetry!" we cried
"Daughters of England!" she began, but here we pulled her down, a black quilted bag vase of
water getting spilt over her in the scuffle
"Thank God!" she exclaimed, shaking herself like a dog"Now I'll roll on
the carpet and see if I can't brush off what remains of the Union Jack
Then perhaps--" here she rolled energeticallyGetting up she began to
explain to us what modern pictures are like when Castalia stopped her
"What is the average size of a picture?" she asked"Perhaps two feet by
two and a half," she saidCastalia made notes while Helen spoke, and
when she had done, and we were trying not to meet each other's eyes, rose
and said, "At your wish I spent last week at Oxbridge, disguised as a
charwomanI thus had access to the rooms of several Professors and will
now attempt to give you some idea--only," she broke off, "I can't think

and one aged bullfinch--a cockI remember," she broke off, "an Aunt of
mine who lived at Dulwich and kept cactusesYou reached the conservatory
through the double drawing-room, and there, on the hot pipes, were dozens
of them, ugly, squat, bristly little plants each in a separate potOnce
in a hundred years the Aloe flowered, so my Aunt saidBut she died
before that happened--" We told her to keep to the point"Well," she
resumed, "when Professor Hobkin was out, I examined his life work, an
edition of SapphoIt's a queer looking book, six or seven inches thick,
not all by SapphoMost of it is a defence of Sappho's chastity,
which some German had denied, add I can assure you the passion with which
these two gentlemen argued, the learning they displayed, the prodigious
ingenuity with which they disputed the use of some implement which looked
to me for all the world like a hairpin astounded me; especially black gucci bags when the
door opened and Professor Hobkin himself appearedA very nice, mild, old
gentleman, but what could he know about chastity?" We misunderstood her
"No, no," she protested, "he's the soul of honour I'm sure--not that he
resembled Rose's sea captain in the leastI was thinking rather of my
Aunt's cactusesWhat could they know about chastity?"
Again we told her not to wander from the point,--did the Oxbridge
professors help to produce good people and good books?--the ob jects of
life
"There!" she exclaimed"It never struck me to askIt never occurred to
me that they could possibly produce anything
"I believe," said Sue, "that you made some mistakeProbably Professor
Hobkin was a gynecologistA scholar is a very different sort of manA
scholar is overflowing with humour and invention--perhaps addicted to
wine, but what of that?--a delightful companion, generous, subtle,
imaginative--as stands to reasonFor he spends his life in company with
the finest human beings that have ever prada bags cheap exiBut still he couldn't sleep
So he tried a method that had often worked for
him beforeHe would choose a place he knew well-- the school, for instance--and imagine himself walking
through it, picturing it as he went in minute detail
Often his thoughts would wander, but he would always
bring them back to the imaginary journey, and something
about doing this would often make him sleepy
This night he decided to retrace his explorations of the
PipeworksHe held his mind to the task for a long
time, picturing, with all the clarity he could muster,
everything he had seen in that underground realm-- the long stairway, the tunnels, the door, the path along
the river, the rocks along the pathHe felt sleep
drawing closer, a heaviness in his limbs, but just as he
was about to give in to it, he saw in his mind's eye the
wrinkled rocks that bordered the river at the west
end of the Pipeworks, the rocks whose gucci purses strange ridges
and creases had reminded him of writingHis eyes
flew open in the dark, his heart began to hammer, and
he gave up on sleeping and lay in a state of terrible
impatience for the rest of the night

CHAPTER 14
The Way Out
The next day was Song Rehearsal DayEveryone was
let off from work at twelve o'clock to practice for
the SingingIt was a slow morning for messagesLina
had a lot of time to sit at her station in Gam Square
and thinkShe put her elbows on her knees, rested her
chin in her hands, and stared down at the pavement in
front of the bench, which was worn smooth by the
many feet that had passed thereShe thought about the
mayor, down in his room full of plunder, gorging on
peaches and asparagus and wrapping his huge body in
elegant new clothesShe thought of his great stack of
light bulbs and shook her head in bewildermentWhat
was he thinking? If he still louis vuitton neo cabby had light bulbs when everyone
else in Ember had run out, would he enjoy sitting
in his lit room while the rest of the city drowned in
darkness? And when the power finally ran out for
178
good, all his light bulbs would be uselessPossessions
couldn't save him--how could he have forgotten that?
He must be thinking the same way as Looper: everything
was hopeless anyhow, so he'd live it up while he
could
She leaned back against the bench, stretched her
legs out, and took a long breathVery soon, the guards
would storm into the secret room and seize the mayor
as he sat stuffing himself on stolen goodiesMaybe
they already hadMaybe today the stunning news
would come: Mayor Arrested! Stealing from Citizens!
Maybe they'd announce it at the Singing, so everyone
could hear it
No one came with any messages to be delivered, so
after a while Lina left her station and found a step to sit
on in an spy bag replica alley off Calloo StreetShe pulled back her
hair and braided it to keep it from sliding around
Then she took from her pocket the copy of the Instructions
she'd made just after she sent her note to the
mayorShe unfolded it and began to study it
This is what she was doing when, a little before
twelve o'clock, she looked up to see Doon running
toward herHe must have come straight from the
Pipeworks--he had a big damp patch of water on one
leg of his pantsHe spoke in an excited rush"I've been
looking all over for you!" he said"I've found it!"
"Found what?"
179
"The E! At least it looks like an EIt must be an E,
though you wouldn't know it if you weren't looking for
it
"You mean the rock marked with an E? In the
Pipeworks?"
"Yes, yes, I found it!" He stood breathing hard, his
eyes blazing"I'd seen it before, hut I didn't think of it
as an E then, just a squiggle that looked tiffany canada like writing
There are all these rocks that look like they're covered
with writing
"Which rocks? Where is it?" Lina was on her feet
now, bouncing with excitement
"Down at the west end of the riverNear where it
goes into that great hole in the Pipeworks wall He
paused, trying to catch his breath"And listen," he said
"We could go there right now
"Right now?"
"Yes, because of rehearsalsEveryone's going
home, so the Pipeworks will be closed and empty
"But if it's closed, how will we get in?"
Grinning, Doon produced a large key from his
pocket"I ducked into the office on my way out and
borrowed the spare key," he said"Lister--he's the
Pipeworks director--was in the bathroom practicing
his singingHe won't miss the key todayAnd
tomorrow, everyone will be off work He did an
impatient shuffle"So come on," he said
The town clock struck the first of its twelve noon

time chanel classic bag booms "Lizzie!" Lina called out
Lizzie must not have heard her"Lizzie, wait!" This time it was clear
that Lizzie had heard, but instead of stopping, she
walked fasterWhat's the matter with her? Lina wondered
She ran after her and grabbed the back of her
coat"Lizzie, it's me!"
Lizzie stopped and turned around
Her face was flushedI

was a distracted look in her eyes"I was just going
home," she saidHer arms were wrapped around a
small bulging sack
"I'll walk with chloe black you," said Lina
144
"Oh," said Lizzie But she didn't look
pleased
"Lizzie, something sad has happened," Lina said
"My grandmother died
Lizzie gave her a quick sideways glance, but she
didn't stop walking"That's too bad," she said absently
"Poor you"
What was wrong with her? Lizzie was ordinarily so
interested in other people's misfortunesShe could be
sincerely sympathetic, too, when she wasn't wrapped
up in her own troubles
Lina changed the subject"What's in the sack?" she
asked
"Oh, just some tiffany co earrings groceries," said Lizzie"I stopped at
the market after work
"You did?" Lina was confusedShe had seen Lizzie
not two minutes ago leaving the storeroom office
Lizzie didn't answerShe began walking and talking
quite fast"It was so busy today at workWork is so
hard, isn't it, Lina? I think work is much harder than
school, and not as interestingYou do the same thing
every dayI get so tired, don't you, running around all
day?"
Lina started to say that she liked running and
hardly ever got tired, but Lizzie didn't rolex watches for women wait for her to
answer
"Oh, well, at least there are some good things
about itGuess what, Lina? I have a boyfriendI met

him at workHe really likes me--he says my hair is the
exact color of a red-hot burner on a stove"
Lina laughed"It's true, Lizzie" she saidYou look
like your head is on fire
Lizzie laughed, too, and lifted one hand to fluff her
hairShe puckered her lips and fluttered her eyelashes
"He says I'm as beautiful as a red tomato
They were crossing Torrick Square nowIt was
crowded in chanel earrings the squarePeople had just left work and
were lining up at the shops and hurrying along with

playing some sort of game
"Who is this boyfriend?" asked Lina
But just at that moment, Lizzie trippedShe'd been
strutting along being beautiful, not paying attention to
her feet, and the edge of her shoe caught on an uneven
place in the pavementShe staggered and fell, and as
she fell she lost her grip on the sackIt hit the ground
and toppled sideways, and some cans spilled omega deville watch
